The Standard Hotel in New york

If you’re looking for a hotel in New York City, try the Standard hotel. The rooms all have floor to ceiling windows with stunning views starting at $195.

The hotel is a product by Andre Balazs, a New York hotelier and residential developer, together with a number of designers such as architect Todd Schliemann of Polshek Partnership and New York-based design firm Roman and Williams (W*97).

The architecture of the hotel is quite special. A total of 337 rooms framed by huge, non-reflective glass windows, in a building with a stark grey exterior perched on towering concrete pylons. The rooms, though compact, come in eight different shapes and sizes, all packed with colour, texture and light.

As for the decoration of the rooms, these are a mixture of retro furniture with contemporary design.

Tree-trunk garden house by Piet Hein Eek

The Thomas Mayer archive shows a tree-trunk garden house, a log house study in Hilversum, the Netherlands for Dutch musical performer Hans Liberg, designed by Piet Hein Eek.

The garden house, originally designed as a cupboard that could serve as a small studio, is part of the Stedelijk Museum’s collection (Amsterdam). It also exists in a Birch tree version. Especially the windows and shutters are fascinating.

Stockholm Furniture Fair

Stockholm Furniture Fair, which takes place from the 9th to the 13th of February, is the world’s biggest meeting place for Nordic design. Here you will find the most comprehensive range of furniture, offices, design, textiles and other interior design for both the home and the public environment.
This edition also features the Nordic Light Fair, where, around 100 exhibitors present the very latest designs in domestic lighting, LEDs, halogen lamps, glass-fibre lights, and glittering chandeliers.
Today approximately 650 exhibitors display their products and get the chance to meet roughly 40,000 visitors.

The fair is open for professional visitors, but on the last day of the fair, members of the public with an interest in design are invited to come and view next season’s products/new features.
Guest of honor is British designer , who is best known as a fashion designer, but he has also designed furniture and upholstery textiles (f.i. for Cappellini and The Rug Company).

Pantone selects turquoise as the colour of 2010

As we approach flipping our calendars to the next decade, the colour experts at pantone have announced their selection for the colour of 2010: turquoise, which they describe as an inviting and luminous hue.

They go on to explain, ‘turquoise evokes thoughts of soothing, tropical waters and a languorous, effective escape from the everyday troubles of the world, while at the same time restoring our sense of wellbeing.’

While there is no real way to check pantone’s predication accuracy, it is always interesting to see where they pick on the colour wheel.

Pantone is the world-renowned authority on color. For more than 45 years, Pantone has been inspiring design professionals with products, services and leading technology for the colorful exploration and expression of creativity.
In 1963, Lawrence Herbert, Pantone's founder, created an innovative system for identifying, matching and communicating colors to solve the problems associated with producing accurate color matches in the graphic arts community.

Pantone has since expanded its color matching system concept to other color-critical industries, including digital technology, fashion, home, plastics, architecture and contract interiors, and paint.

Exposition Ingo Maurer ‘Ode to the lightbulb’

IB lichtateljee in St. Andries (near Bruges) organizes an exposition that brings an ode to the lightbulb, of which certain versions (amongst which the frosted version) have been banned from the EU market since the 1st of September. In the light of this new EU legislation, Ingo Maurer has developed the so-called ‘Euro-condom’, which was presented at the Milan design week 2009. The Euro-condom is a heat-resistant silicon cover that turns a clear bulb into a frosted one.

Ingo’s motto is:‘how to protect yourself from stupid rules’.

Dutch Design Week

Van 17 tot en met 25 oktober wordt in Eindhoven de Dutch Design Week gehouden.
Het programma bestaat uit talrijke evenementen, congressen, lezingen, bedrijfsbezoeken, en workshops. Zo kun je bijvoorbeeld zelf aan de slag bij DSM in de workshop ‘Proudly Plastics’, waar je DSM producten omvormt tot kunst, danwel er een andere functie aan geeft.

Je kunt verder het afstudeerwerk van studenten aan de Design academy bekijken en nieuwe interieur-producten spotten. Met meer dan 1500 deelnemende vormgevers op 60 lokaties in Eindhoven (NL) genoeg te zien en doen dus!

Bijzonder mooi Dutch design

Bij BijzonderMOOI koop je online origineel (Dutch) design dat mooi, vernieuwend én betaalbaar is. Je kunt zowel zoeken op categorie, merk en designer.

Je vindt hier bijvoorbeeld de ‘leaves’, van Richard Hutten, ontworpen vanuit een probleem dat zich stelde met systeemplafonds bij de herinrichting van de kantoren van Museum Boijmans van Beuningen. Dat vroeg om een creatieve oplossing!

Het leek Hutten een mooi idee om het gevoel van bomen en bladeren door te laten lopen ín het gebouw. Hij dacht aan grote bladeren tegen het plafond.

Veel simpeler kan het niet: een blaadje van kunststof met een sterk magneetje in de steel. Gooi ’t tegen iets van staal of metaal, en het blaadje blijft zitten. Neem een paar honderd van die blaadjes, plaats of gooi ze allemaal tegen een metalen systeemplafond, en je hebt een geweldig vrolijk bladerdek boven je hoofd, dat nog functioneel is ook. Want al die blaadjes dempen geluid en verbeteren zo de akoestiek in de ruimte.
